Preparing for Pitch

When preparing for out pitch we designed a mood board so when explaining to the class what our ideas were it would be easier for them to understand.

We created a Prezi document so that all the information was grouped together, it also looked more professional. Before we presented our pitch to the class we had to have completed all the relevant research to do with our band, and what song we were going to chose. We had to know roughly what locations we were going to use as well as having all the story boards and our individual ancillary tasks completed to a high standard.

When performing out pitch we had decided to film it as evidence of us presenting it to the class.

Research

Now that I have annotated 4 music videos from a variety of genres of our choice I am now going to annotate a video that has no meaning or story behind the song. I will also annotate this video to show the difference within a good video that has a story with in the video and within the lyrics and a video that may have a meaning but is not shown within the video.

A very popular music video at the moment is Gangnam Style by PSY. In my opinion this music video has no story line behind; it refers to objects in the video that are said by the singer.

After watching this music video I have seen that to make a effective music video you have to have a story/meaning behind the music and lyric, this way the audience feels more involved as they will have emotions for the characters in the story, if we are able to control how the audience feels by the way we make our story to the music then we know that we have made a successful music video. From previous theory media lessons I already know of common conventions that would be good to use to attract our target audience of both male and female, such as the gaze theory, common fashion/style conventions and more all this will help me create a successful music video.

From other music videos that I have annotated I have seen that most music videos now days are to do with relationships either breaking up or getting back together family argument, friends and more. From this I feel it would be a good idea to do a music video with the back story being about relationship preferably a young couple and there problems, as this seems to be a popular back story to certain music videos.

Research

We have chosen our favorite song from each genre; therefore we will be able to analysis the music video and see different techniques and effects that we like.
With our music video we need to pick a song that we all like, we also need to pick a song that has a story behind it otherwise this project will become harder for us to make a video if there is no story behind the words.
The 4 songs that we have chosen have all got stories behind them, I will also show a music video that hasn’t got a story behind the music, I will be able to show how hard it is to make a video to a music video that has now story.
Below are the 4 music videos that I will analysis:-
Olly Murs -"Trouble Maker"-Pop. Click on the link below to watch the official video.

Annotation

This song in my opinion is about “that” special girl that he can’t let go of, even though he knows he should, the girl has a very wild side. Therefore it is a romantic song however has an upbeat and catchy theme to it. The word “      Troublemaker” is about falling for someone you probably shouldn’t go out with but just can’t resist.
The video starts with Murs entering a cafe, where he sees a young woman working as a waitress there. She pours water on a customer in retaliation to him smacking her bottom, causing her to be fired by her boss. He then meets the woman again, who is now working in a record shop and sees her stacking records (including one that has picture of Murs on it that says "Olly Murs' Greatest Hits"), but due to her wearing headphones she can't hear what a customer is saying to her and gets fired again. Next, Murs sees her working at a clothes store where she is dressing mannequins but when she notices Murs watching her she ends up knocking them over and is once again fired. Flo Rida is then seen in a billboard on a beach next to a luxury car with two bikini clad women inside it. The video ends with Murs meeting the woman again, this time in a nightclub with friends where she accidentally knocks over a man carrying a tray of drinks, setting off a further chain of unfortunate events. Murs comes to her rescue and the two begin to leave but are stopped by one of the club's bouncers.
This video show the development from Olly Murs first seeing the girl in the cafe, to then seeing her again in a variety of different places, but never being able to get her for himself. At the end they are both at a bar, as trouble stars with the woman, Olly Murs goes in to sort it out, as they both go to run out together the bouncer stops them, this shows that fate just doesn’t want them together.

Plain White T's-"Hey There Delihah" - Romantic. Click on the link below to watch the official video .

Annotation

In the first stanza of this song, the artist talks about a girl name Delilah who is in New York City, a thousand miles away from him. In the second stanza the artist tells Delilah to just listen to this song that he wrote for her. That if she was lonely just listens to this song. In the forth stanza he, the artist talks about how their current condition is rough and that he promises one day when he becomes famous they'll have everything they desire, to be able to live the good life. In the fifth stanza he says that he has so much to say to Delilah but is unable to say everything in his mind through this song. In the seventh stanza he tells Delilah that he would travel using anyway just to see her. He tells her that their friends would laugh because they wouldn't understand and that when they are united, everything will change for them. In the eighth stanza he explains how Delilah will be done with school in two years, he also says that by that time he'll be famous making music. Soon they would be able to do whatever they wanted to. Lines three, six, and nine are the chorus. When he says "it's what you do to me," he tells Delilah that she is the one that made him do all this and to write this song for her.

Overall this song is about a young couple who are separated in far distances. The girl, Delilah is attending school in New York City while another is far away singing songs and making music, hoping one day he'll be famous and live the life he dreamed of living. He misses Delilah and can't tell her how much he misses her through this song. He hopes that one day they will be able to be together again and live happily ever after. This video uses split screen to within these split screens one side will show the Plain White T’s performing, while the other side shows the video.
There are a lot of close ups within the video, this is to show the emotions on the actors faces, as this is a romantic song there will be a lot of emotions on the actors faces.  Some of the scenes are in black and white this in my opinion is more dramatic, the audience will pick up more on the emotional side of the song, rather than the colours that are within the video. If certain scenes are in black and white it is easier to make different objects stand out as the producers could place a significant object in colour therefore it catches the audience’s attention straight away.

Swedish House Mafia -"Dont You Worry Child"-Urban
Annotation
This song is about growing up and dealing with new and difficult emotions, but pulling through because of love and hope gave by a parent. This song uses emotional contrasts, where it switches between sad scenes of present ad happy scenes of the past. Within this song there is a strong message of hope and happiness sent out to the audience, the song reminds the audience of emotions they felt within relations with loved ones who have been in their lives, who may not be there anymore, such as parents, friends, family, boyfriends/girlfriends. I feel that this song and video uses imagery to pull the audience in and think of their memories of similar situations “Look into my father’s eyes”
This song talks about experiences likely to relate to a variety of large amount of people within the songs main target audience of 15-25, people this age are still going through emotional struggle of getting older and dealing with things.
The video is in black and white at the beginning and the end, the video shows the build up to finally performing the song live at a gig. Using real live footage, showing the target audience age just having fun and letting go of worries and emotions and just having fun.

Linkin Park-"Burn it down"-Rock

Annotation
In my opinion there is one possible interpretation of this song, is of a relationship between two lovers. The narrator is a dutiful and loving "soldier" of his/her "king", and has a less dominant role in the relationship. However, the pair consistently run into confrontations, only to make up again. It appears that the King seems to be apologetic for, and causing these fall outs, as evidenced by the fact that they are the one who waits to speak at the turn (and make up), where as the Soldier becomes more and more distressed by the arrangement, and eventually intends to let go at the turn (and break up). This is supported by the verses below:

"You told me yes
You held me high
And I believed when you told that lie
I played soldier, you played king
And struck me down, when I kissed that ring
You lost that right, to hold that crown
I built you up, but you let me down
So when you fall, I'll take my turn
And fan the flames
As your blazes burn"

These seem to speak of a faithlessness and deceit on the King's part, and a loss of trust and respect on the Soldier's part, as well as cementing the King's higher standing in the relationship.

Area Of Focus

As a group we have all decided to create a Music Video, now our next focus is to decide what song we are going to create a video to. Below I have created a spider diagram I have written down our 4 favorite genres and placed songs underneath them; out of this selection we will choose our favorite song.

Here I looked at the top 4 singles and top 40 albums, with this there are a good few songs and albums that are produced by pop rock genres; this shows me that making a video for the genre pop rock would be a good idea, as pop rock seems to be a popular genre at the moment.
This is the top 8 of the singles from looking at this I can see 5 out of the 8 songs that are pop rock genres.

The albums below are the all in the top 8 of the top 40 albums; from looking at these album genres I can see that 3 out of the 8 are pop rock genre.

Knowing that pop rock genre is of a popular genre at the moment gives me confidence that I have chosen the right genre as it is popular with the public at the moment and as it is a popular genre it should sell well whether I create an album or just a single I know that it will do well.

Brief

In this project we have been given a brief to create a promo package and/either a music video or film trailer.  The second part of the project is the ancillary task, which included a website, magazine advert and a promotional package. The task was to choose two of the ancillary tasks and create them for our music video.
