Development - Font and Logo Research

As we had chosen our band name all we need now is the font, we need to chose a font that would look well on our ancillary task so it needs to be bold and stand out well to the audience as well as fitting in with our genre. However in order to differentiate them from each other, we decided to add an effect to make the font stand out that much more to the audience. We decided as a group to choose a font called "Poor Richard" it was a bold, clear font that fitted right into our genre.

Below I have placed a few different ideas of how to make the text stand out to the audience

We chose to emphasize the "P, W and T" we felt that this would catch the audiences attention, plus it made the band name look more interesting if the beginning letter of each word was bigger than the rest of the word. However now when looking at the band name it still look like it is missing something so we place two lines above and below the text to add more of an effect. We chose to have the lines red as it was part of our colour scheme as the song we were creating was a romantic song.

As a group we needed to design a logo for our ancillary task, therefore I started researching music logos to see what time of logo was popular. I came across a lot of interesting logos however I have placed logos below that I felt would go when representing the Plain White T's.

These are the logos that I feel are the best, they are simple yet effective, logos need to be simple so that the audience can easily remember the logo and know that it represents a certain band or music artist.

Below is the Plain White T's logo, again this logo is simple yet effective. The name of the band is all in capitals on a back rectangle, black is a good colour to use as basically every colour contrasts well off of it. White has been used to outline the name of the band this makes the bands name stand out clearly to the audience even if of a small size. A small but effective detail id the pull of the paper on the top right side, this is only a small effect but catches the audiences attention straight away.

From the research that I have completed I feel that the logo for the Plain White T's should be simple, a simple background colour with the words "Plain White T's" placed on the background

The font for the majority of the writing on the album and magazine advertisement needs to be clear and stand out to the audience  As a group we have already looked what font we should use when we presented out pitch so we already have a few ideas of what we were going to choose. We have a selection of options to choose from

These are the font that we had in mind, from these we have to choose one for all of our main text and for our logo if we choose tho have text.

As we look at these fonts we look at other fonts with the same genre as the Plain White T's indie/rock, we noticed that none of the fonts on professional logos are in italics so we took that font away, as a group w decided that the bottom logo wouldn't fit the genre either. We all as a group love both the last fonts nut we though as we are create a music video for a love song have a clear, bold, thick font like the second font down would look right when we create our ancillary task so we have decided to go for the font third down called "Poor Richard" this is the font we would use for all the major information and for the text on the logo if we decide to place text on the logo.

Below I have place the name Plain White T's in the chosen font.

As a group we had now decided what font we were going to use in the logo and for the majority of text, we then looked back at our logo sketches a decided what one we though would look good. As the Plain White T's tend to sing a lot of songs about love, relationship, romance, breakup etc, we thought a heart would be a good logo.

Our first initial ideas were to have a heart with the Plain White T's written across the heart or a midnight sky with the same words written across. These were just our first ideas so we quickly designed them both to see what they looked like. This is how they came out.

Instantly I knew what logo I wanted to improve on, I thought the heart logo would be the best logo as the heart and the colour of the heart could represent something within the band. As a group we decided to leave the first logo ideas a improve the second logo ideas which is the heart. First of all we needed to find a heart that would be effective, we needed to find a heart with the right shape and colour. We all decided to stay with the petal making the hearts as throughout our work we had been talking about having petal as a symbol that our audience would remember us by.

We had looked at a variety of hearts, below are the ones we liked the most.

Looking at these heart we each had our favorite, so we went round our class asking our peers what they though, we told them the type of genre and the type of songs the band sings, it came to a decision that the third heart down would be the best to use, as we would easily be able to place text on it, it would have been harder to place text on the other hearts as thy all either had the middle part of the heart missing or had patterns within the hearts, this would have made it hard to make text stand out. So we decided to take our class mates advise a pick the third heart as the start of our logo.

As we had now chosen our heart we wanted all we now needed to do was, create the text and place it onto the heart in a layout that we thought would be effective, this process would be simple as we knew exactly what text we were gonna use "Poor Richard" and the house style colours are red and white to the text would be white.

Here is the process we went through to create our logo, we had to create the heart into a smart object to we were able to get rid of the white background behind.
We then placed the text over the heart, we decided to write it all in capitals as we thought the letters would stand out more to the audience. Each word has its own line to make each word stand out more.

This is our final product for are logo.
